Approaching the Guitar…
Alex: I’ve always written guitar parts in riffs. I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin, U2, Metallica, then onto Franz Ferdiand, Circa Survive, The Recieving End of Sirens, The Killers etc. All those bands have one thing in common—great riffs.
So, I guess the idea of the riff rubbed off on me since that’s what I mostly play. I have no formal training so I really just play what I feel. I rely heavily on inspiration. What mood I’m in usually determines what I come up with. Luckily, I’m usually in a good mood.
On this EP (the brand new, Foolish Things EP—Ed.) I feel like I’ve been able to express myself through my instrument more than ever before. Without any restrictions, I was able to come out of my shell as a guitarist. I go by one rule: it doesn’t matter if it’s technical or simple, as long as it’s stuck in my head the next morning.
Being that this is The Vinyl District, it would be blasphemous for me to not mention my favorite record: my prized original Kill ‘Em All by Metallica from 1983. It has “Am I Evil” and “Blitzkrieg” which are not on the CD format versions. Rock ‘N Roll…

We write music, sing harmonies, and then comes the story….
Natasha: The writing process starts with Alex. He comes up with a riff, a bass line backs it up, and a melody pops in my head.
When I sat down to write lyrics before I would come up with a plot, a story, maybe even something that happened that day. With this record I just wrote, (the brand new, Foolish Things EP—Ed.) I would come up with the melody which in turn would inspire lyrics, and when the ink hit paper it was finite—it made me go with the flow.
The music was the only thing I would allow to speak to me, not my thoughts. I mean, whatever works, works. The hook on “This City” was born in a cab ride to JFK and I said “ Hmm, maybe I should record this…” (Always record your ideas.) I pulled out my voice memo app (super handy) and there you go. I can be home, or the studio, in a car, or at work and once I’m inspired….it’s go time.
What I would say to other writers out there is don’t limit yourself. Just let the music speak to you and you’ll know what to do after that, if you just stay in the moment.

What was the process like making the brand new, Foolish Things EP?
We started writing the songs for the the EP back in November. Our music previously had a more electronic feel, but we decided to take it in a vocal and guitar driven direction. It came naturally to us which made the writing process enjoyable since it was coming from a genuine place. Unlike music these days which many times is factory made.
Natasha: We really just “went with it” on this one. We weren’t thinking, “ What would so and so think, what’s on the radio now, what are we expected to do?” We just did what felt right, we did what we do best…make music.
Alex: “Think outside the box” was one of the themes we had going when we started writing. We didn’t want to put walls up on our own creativity. We wrote “This City” and “Down Like Downtown” back to back. I knew at that moment what we were doing felt right because I was in love with the songs and how they didn’t sound like anything else we’ve done really.
Having a team of people around us who supported the music was very important. We recorded the EP with Tony Noriega at Bluemess Productions. Tony was able to see our vision and capture the vibe of our music on the EP. It took two months, but we didn’t rush the process. We wanted to record it as we heard it in our heads.
Our photos were done with Julia Arielle Cox. She did—and has always done—an amazing job. When we go on tour hopefully she’s coming with!
This EP was a labor of love for the music we believe in. We hope people can feel that when they hear it.
You’re forgiven if you don’t know what it takes to make it these days. Hell, we can’t even come to a consensus here in the TVD office.
My honest opinion is that I miss the old goal posts. (Right, I said it.) Not in the sense of needing to be SIGNED to consider you or your band this close to the brass ring—but having been vetted by some process of weeding out the junk and making room for the junk-free. The internet may be empowering and bring the horses to your water, but do you have that magic stuff to turn that water into, well…Kool-Aid? Will we come back to drink it? And what does it take?
We’ll be asking these questions aloud in essence in our brand new TVD Spotlight feature—conceived as a week long “First Date” but with an act from any genre we’re pegging for big things.
We’re inaugurating our brand new monthly feature with Miami’s Fancy Me Yet.
(Who we’re fancying, by the way. Now.)
Fancy Me Yet: How it came to be…
We are an indie/rock band from Miami, Florida trying to spread our music outside of the panhandle of America. This band has a bit of story to it, stories that have made our music what it is today.
Natasha: It all began when I decided to leave my ties with EMI Latin to pursue what was close to my heart. I didn’t want to become a factory made artist. The reason I make music is because I have a passion for it. It is my form of expression and without that freedom it’s not music to me. It would be karaoke—and karaoke is only fun when you’re drunk with friends.
I continued pursuing my music and then met Alex. We shared the same musical interests and the same love for the art. As soon as we started writing it was instant musical chemistry and we knew we had to pursue our music together…kinda like Batman and Robin.
Alex: When we started back in 2008, I really admired that Natasha wanted to leave what she was doing and pursue what she wanted musically. I was going through the motions in college and felt that the music we were making had so much potential. So, I left college behind me. I remember someone told me that you can’t get to home base if your foot is still on third. Now, when I listen to these songs on the EP, I’m so proud I took that leap just as Natasha did.
Fancy Me Yet | Down Like Downtown
We went through our rocky roads and had a few speed bumps along the way, which we still have, but we are thankful for that. We are thankful for everyone that thinks we can’t do it. Thankful for those holes in the walls that helped us grow our tough skin and thankful for for everyone that still believes and keeps fueling “Fancy Me Yet.”
